Sweet Justice for families in Cape Town

An amount of R293,013 has been reimbursed to five mothers who were robbed of their maintenance money by Rene Borchjes, a 35 year old justice official, with the refunded amounts coming straight from Rene's very own pension fund.

Last year it was discovered that Rene was diverting maintenance money paid from ex-husbands and former partners, directly into her own bank account leaving families in financial distress.

In court on Thursday some mothers wept while they told Hishaam Mohamed, the Regional Justice Department head, how they had to borrow money from their friends and neighbours just to get to the court house to find out what was happening with their money.

Some of the defrauded mothers have spent nearly 3 years trying to find out what happened with one mother sadly passing away from motor neuron disease before seeing a cent.

In addition to Rene Borchjes having her pension attached she will serve a 6 year prision sentence.

Justice sweetly served - Well done Cape Town!

Sandstorm in Bloem

Susan Van der Westhuizen was in Bloemfontein on Thursday and captured these amazing images.

The blankets of sand and dust were caused by thunderstorms which happened about 70km's west of the city.

Needless to say the residents of Bloemfontein now have limited visibility and weeks of dusting ahead of them!

Mortar fired in Brakpan

UPDATE 28/09/2014 - This mortar was reportedly shot off for light purposes but it seems this mortar was fired at 11am - and still nothing mentioned about this in the news

________________________________________

Reports from author and journalist, Jacques Steenkamp (@jacqueSteenkamp), a mortar has been fired into a home in Brakpan, East Rand, JHB, injuring Felicia Kloppers (20).

According to Felicia's mother, the whole house shook, she heard a bang and found her daughter covered in blood on her bed. The mortar entered through Felicia's bedroom roof.

Her father has said that she now undergo an operation to remove foreign objects from her head.

Conrad Diedericks had explained on Facebook that this mortar was shot into the sky to provide light.
"Somewhere there must be the nose which burns and the little parachute which is launched from the pipe together with the nose.

The nose and the body detach after about 16 seconds and the body turns away. That's the part shown on the picture."

Police are investigating.
